Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Individual dosage adjustment per patient. Swallow whole with more than 1/2 cup of water. This medication is taken orally once a day. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. Start with an initial dose of 1 mg of Glimperide once daily, and if necessary, increase the dosage by 1 mg at intervals of 1-2 weeks. Generally, there is little additional benefit in doses greater than 4 mg, though some patients may achieve better metabolic control by increasing to 6 mg (or 8 mg). If the 4 mg daily dose fails, consider transitioning to insulin therapy, or alternatively consider combining with insulin or other oral hypoglycemic agents.

Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Impairment of blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be taken alone alongside dietary and exercise regimens, and if blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be combined with other antihyperglycemic agents or insulin. Particularly, this medication is more effective in blood sugar control when combined with sulfonylureas or when treatment with metformin alone is inadequate. This medication is effectively used for blood sugar management in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or severe hepatic and renal dysfunction. It should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and insulin therapy is preferable for patients with severe infections or around surgical procedures. Patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should also refrain from using this medication. During the first week of administration, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia; thus, blood sugar levels should be closely monitored, particularly in elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, those with irregular eating habits, or those with weakened renal or hepatic function. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and decreased consciousness, and if any of these symptoms occur, sugar should be consumed immediately. This medication may affect the liver or blood, so if symptoms of liver dysfunction or blood abnormalities appear, a consultation with a physician is necessary. Allergic reactions such as urticaria, rash, or difficulty breathing may occur, and if such symptoms arise, discontinue use and inform healthcare professionals immediately. During treatment with this medication, it is crucial to maintain a consistent diet and exercise regimen and to regularly check blood sugar levels. Interactions may occur when taking other medications, so inform healthcare professionals of all medications currently being taken and proceed with caution. Overdose may lead to severe hypoglycemia, so if suspected, immediate emergency care and hospital visits are necessary. Store this medication out of reach of children and in its original container for safe storage.
