Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of high cholesterol
This medication helps in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is particularly effective in adults aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, as well as in older adults or those with multiple risk factors such as smoking and hypertension, and patients with type 2 diabetes for the reduction of myocardial infarction and stroke risk. It also helps reduce the risk of angina, need for vascular grafting, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it improves cholesterol and triglyceride levels while serving as adjunct therapy to increase HDL cholesterol. It is safe to help manage total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Overall, it effectively improves cardiovascular health and decreases the risk of related diseases.
The recommended starting dose for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg once daily; however, if a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol levels is necessary, treatment may begin with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. It is administered within a dosing range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. After initiating treatment, lipid levels should be evaluated within 2 to 4 weeks to adjust the dose. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the daily dose is 1.
The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. Dosage should be adjusted with intervals of 4 weeks or more.
