This medication is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, and for long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also used in conjunction with antibiotics for the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers infected by Helicobacter pylori. It helps in treating disorders associated with excessive acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. In short, it is effectively used for the treatment and management of various gastrointestinal diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Gastric Ulcer, Duodenal Ulcer: 10 mg orally once a day. Depending on symptoms, it may be increased to 20 mg once daily. Treatment duration is 8 weeks for gastric ulcer and 6 weeks for duodenal ulcer. Erosive or Ulcerative Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. If not resolved after 8 weeks of treatment, 10 mg or 20 mg may be taken orally twice daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or any of its components, patients allergic to penicillin or macrolide antibiotics, patients on specific cardiac medications, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients on certain antiviral medications should not take this medication. Patients with liver dysfunction or elderly patients should use this medication with caution, and those with a history of drug allergies should also be careful. This medication contains a pigment called Tartrazine, which should be avoided by individuals sensitive to this component. During the use of this drug, allergic symptoms such as skin rash and itching may occur, and if such symptoms appear, the use should be stopped immediately. Routine blood tests are recommended as there may be changes in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelet counts. Liver function tests should be performed regularly, and if symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice appear, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Various side effects such as cardiac-related symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, neurological symptoms, respiratory symptoms, muscle pain, and skin rashes have been reported, so if there are any unusual symptoms, medical consultation is advised. This medication strongly suppresses gastric acid secretion, which may increase the risk of fractures due to osteoporosis with long-term use, and symptoms of magnesium deficiency may occasionally occur. It is important to regularly monitor magnesium levels if taken for a long period of time or in combination with certain medications. Additionally, as gastric acid decreases, the risk of bacterial infection in the stomach may slightly increase, so if diarrhea persists, inform your healthcare provider. This drug does not significantly affect driving or operating machinery; however, caution is advised as drowsiness may occur. This medication may interact with other drugs, particularly if you are taking antibiotics, antivirals, or anticoagulants, it is essential to consult your doctor or pharmacist. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication. Elderly individuals should have their dosage adjusted or discontinued at any sign of unusual symptoms due to the potential for decreased liver function. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed, and should be stored out of reach of children. There are no specific antidotes in case of overdose, so appropriate treatment should be administered according to symptoms.
