For essential hypertension, Telmisartan should be administered orally at a dose of 40 mg once daily with water and can be taken regardless of meals. This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease for individuals over 55 years old who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease and are unable to utilize ACE inhibitors. It is particularly effective in patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or high-risk diabetes. Therefore, this medication is used safely and effectively for the reduction of hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, Telmisartan should be administered orally at a dose of 40 mg once daily with water and can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and if necessary, the dose may be increased up to 80 mg once daily. Dose increases show the maximum antihypertensive effect 4-8 weeks after starting treatment. For reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, 80 mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, and should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Patients with very poor liver function or biliary obstruction should also avoid using this medication. Individuals with allergies to this medication or its ingredients should not take it. Caution is required for those with a history of angioedema or specific angioedema patients. Diabetic patients or those with severely impaired kidney function should not use this medication with certain drugs. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, and those with slightly impaired liver function should use this medication carefully. Patients with heart valve disease or heart-related diseases should be cautious to avoid significant drops in blood pressure. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders should be cautious of the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding when taking this medication. Patients with renal artery stenosis should take special care due to the risk of worsening kidney function. This medication lowers blood pressure, so caution is necessary as symptoms like hypotension, dizziness, or fainting may appear. There may be an increase in potassium levels in the blood, so regular blood tests are recommended. When taken in combination with other antihypertensives, diuretics, lithium preparations, etc., the risk of side effects may increase due to drug interactions, so consulting a physician is advised. Caution is also needed when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or fainting. This medication is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmias, and kidney dysfunction may occur, so immediate medical help should be sought. When storing, keep it out of reach of children, avoid moisture and maintain the original packaging.
