This medication is effective for myocardial ischemic conditions due to hypertension or stable and variant angina. Additionally, it is used to reduce the risk of hospitalization due to angina and the risk associated with coronary artery revascularization in patients where coronary artery disease has been confirmed through recent angiography, with no heart failure and a cardiac output of over 40%. With these effects, it helps improve cardiovascular health and treat angina.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: 5 mg of amlodipine is administered orally once daily and may be increased to a maximum of 10 mg per day depending on the patient's response. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in certain patients. For example, individuals with allergies to this drug or similar classes of medications, pregnant women or those capable of becoming pregnant, breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver dysfunction, patients with severe aortic stenosis, and those in a state of shock should not take this medication. The drug should be used cautiously in patients with severe hypotension, patients requiring dialysis due to renal failure, and the elderly. Various side effects may occur while taking this medication; the most common symptoms include flushing, fatigue, swelling, palpitations, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, abdominal pain, and nausea. Rarely, symptoms such as excessively low blood pressure, vasculitis, neurological abnormalities, sexual dysfunction, digestive issues, increased blood sugar levels, myalgia, and skin rashes may occur, necessitating immediate consultation with a physician if abnormal symptoms appear. Patients with heart failure or impaired liver function require special caution when using this medication, as the blood pressure-lowering effect may gradually diminish even after discontinuing the medication. Therefore, when combining with other antihypertensives, the dosage and interval should be adjusted while monitoring the condition. This medication may not be effective in emergency situations such as unstable angina. Additionally, while this drug is generally not known to impair driving or machinery operation capabilities in most individuals, caution is warranted as effects may vary between individuals. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, it is important to inform the physician or pharmacist when taking it with certain antibiotics, antihypertensives, anticoagulants, immunosuppressants, or grapefruit juice, and to monitor carefully. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication, as its safety has not been established; if necessary, it should be discussed with a physician. During breastfeeding, it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding while taking this medication. The safety and efficacy in children have not been sufficiently established, so it should be administered cautiously to pediatric patients. Elderly patients generally tolerate the standard dosage well, but adjustments may be needed depending on individual circumstances. In cases of overdose, blood pressure may drop excessively, and heart rate may increase, requiring immediate emergency treatment, and steps to reduce drug absorption such as gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be necessary. Close monitoring of cardiac and respiratory function should be conducted, and vasoconstrictors may need to be used. This drug is not known to cause carcinogenicity or mutagenicity with prolonged use.
