Improvement of chronic constipation and constipation in infants and young children
This medication is used for chronic constipation, constipation in infants and children, and constipation that occurs after childbirth.
To treat chronic constipation, this medication is administered before breakfast. Typically, for the first 2-3 days, 15-30mL is taken orally before breakfast daily, followed by 10-15mL daily. In severe cases, up to 45mL may be administered.
Children (ages 7-14) should be given 15mL once daily for the first 2-3 days and then continue with 10mL once daily thereafter. Infants (ages 1-6) should be given 5-10mL once daily. Babies (under 12 months) should be given 5mL once daily.
This medication should not be taken by patients with inflammatory bowel disease, blocked gastrointestinal tract, unexplained abdominal pain, galactosemia, perforation or risk of perforation in the gastrointestinal tract, and those allergic to this medication or its components. Additionally, this medication contains lactose, so patients with a genetic inability to digest lactose should also avoid taking it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and breastfeeding should consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication. Caution is required when administering to infants or children as it may affect bowel reflex function. Elderly patients taking this medication for more than 6 months should have their electrolyte levels checked regularly. Patients with diabetes, fructose intolerance, or fluid or electrolyte imbalances should assess their condition before taking this medication and correct it if necessary. Patients with acute gastritis or chronic constipation should first try other treatment methods, such as dietary changes or exercise, before using this medication. When taken with certain medications, interactions may increase side effects or decrease the effectiveness of this medication, so patients taking α-glucosidase inhibitors like acarbose, broad-spectrum antibiotics, diuretics, corticosteroids, amphotericin B, cardiac glycosides, antacids, etc., should consult a healthcare professional. If constipation does not improve after taking this medication for more than a week, it should be discontinued, and a consultation with a healthcare professional should be sought, especially if there are sudden changes in bowel habits. Overdosage may cause abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and electrolyte loss, so if any unusual symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Long-term or excessive use may lead to dependence of bowel reflex function on the medication, therefore caution is necessary. If diarrhea or loose stools occur, the dosage should be reduced or discontinued, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as belching, abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting may occur. If a patient taking this medication is to undergo a rectal examination or colonoscopy, the presence of high concentrations of hydrogen gas in the intestines during the procedure poses an explosion risk, so the bowel must be completely cleansed before the examination. Long-term or excessive use may lead to fluid loss and electrolyte abnormalities, especially hypokalemia and hypernatremia, so caution is advised. Long-term administration in children increases the risk of tooth decay, so dental hygiene should be maintained. There are no specific reports of toxicity or malformations in the fetus or newborn if taken by pregnant women, but it is advisable for pregnant women or those who may become pregnant to consult a healthcare professional before taking it. Breastfeeding women should also consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication. Rarely, unusual immune reactions may occur, such as skin rashes, itching, hives, or erythema, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, notify a healthcare professional immediately. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be stored in a different container from the original packaging to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
