This medicine is used to treat essential hypertension and helps to effectively control blood pressure. Additionally, it is used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular diseases in patients over 55 years old with a high risk of cardiovascular disease who cannot use angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, it is recommended to administer 40 mg of Telmisartan orally once daily; in some patients, 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 80 mg once daily. To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is recommended to administer 80 mg orally once daily. For patients with liver impairment, the dose should not exceed 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus during pregnancy; therefore, it's essential to stop taking it immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, and those with specific angioedema should not take this medication. Elderly patients and those with hyperkalemia or liver, heart, or kidney conditions should use this drug cautiously. Since it can lower blood pressure, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and fainting may occur; caution is necessary. This medication may affect liver and kidney function, so regular blood tests and kidney function tests are essential. Serious side effects such as hyperkalemia, angioedema, liver dysfunction, and renal failure may occur, so consult a doctor immediately if symptoms arise. When taken with other antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, or potassium supplements, the risk of side effects may increase due to interactions; guidance from a healthcare professional is recommended. It is advisable to discontinue this medication 24 hours before surgery, and caution should be exercised while driving or operating dangerous machinery due to potential dizziness or drowsiness.
