Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension, which is hypertension of unknown origin. It also helps decrease the risk of cardiovascular complications such as myocardial infarction and stroke, particularly in patients aged 55 or older who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease. This includes patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack, as well as those with high-risk diabetes. It is designed to be safely administered even when angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors cannot be used. Therefore, this medication is effective not only in managing hypertension but also in protecting cardiovascular health, improving the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Essential Hypertension: Telmisartan should be orally administered once daily at a dose of 40 mg with water, irrespective of meals. In some patients, a dose of 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. Dose increases show maximum blood pressure-lowering effects within 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. Risk reduction of cardiovascular disease: It is recommended to administer 80 mg once daily orally with water, irrespective of meals.
This medication can pose serious risks to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver function or problems with bile excretion should also avoid its use. Patients with allergies to this medication or its components, as well as those with hereditary angioedema, should not use it. Caution is needed for patients with diabetes or severe kidney disease, as concomitant use with certain medications may be hazardous. Caution is also advised for the elderly or patients with high potassium levels or mildly impaired liver function. Patients with heart or vascular diseases should be careful while taking this medication as excessive decreases in blood pressure may result in complications. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases need to be aware of the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Those with renal vascular issues should also avoid use due to the risk of renal function decline. This medication lowers blood pressure; thus, symptoms like hypotension, dizziness, and fainting may occur, and immediate consultation with healthcare providers is necessary if such symptoms arise. Regular blood tests are essential to monitor potential increases in potassium levels. If severe adverse reactions like liver dysfunction, skin rashes, or respiratory distress occur, medication should be discontinued immediately and a hospital visit is required. This medication may interact with other antihypertensives, certain diuretics, and potassium supplements, so it's crucial to inform your healthcare provider about other medications you are taking. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery due to risks of dizziness or fainting. In cases of overdose, hypotension, arrhythmias, or worsening renal function may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. It is not recommended for children as safety and efficacy have not been established. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
