Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with factors such as older age, smoking, and hypertension, as well as in patients with type 2 diabetes, and also decreases the risks associated with vascular reconstruction and angina. Furthermore, in patients with existing cardiovascular diseases, it is effective in reducing the risk of hospitalization for myocardial infarction, stroke, or congestive heart failure. It is also used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia while raising HDL cholesterol. It is used in conjunction with dietary therapy to treat familial hypercholesterolemia in young pediatric patients. Therefore, this drug is used to improve cardiovascular health and treat dyslipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia: The recommended starting dose is 10 mg atorvastatin once daily, but for patients requiring more significant LDL cholesterol reduction, starting doses of 20 mg or 40 mg once daily can be considered. This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after initiation of treatment and dose adjustments should be made accordingly. Homozygous
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17): The recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg once daily. The dose should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication may cause muscle symptoms, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, it should be discontinued immediately and a physician consulted. This medication can affect liver function; thus, it should not be taken if there is liver disease or elevated liver function test values. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Children, especially those under 10 years of age, should not take this medication, while those aged between 10 and 18 years should follow medical advice. Patients with a history of excessive alcohol consumption or liver disease should use this medication with caution. This medication may interact with other drugs, so anyone currently taking other medications must inform their doctor or pharmacist. Caution is especially necessary when taking it together with specific antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and some heart medications. If sudden muscle pain, weakness, fever, or fatigue occurs during treatment, medical personnel should be notified immediately. It is important to undergo regular liver function tests and muscle-related tests while taking this medication. There is no specific antidote in case of overdose, so appropriate treatment should be given according to symptoms, and blood tests should be conducted to assess liver function and muscle status.
