Efficacy & effects

Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia

View approved original text

This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, including heterozygous familial and non-familial patients, as well as mixed dyslipidemia. It also increases HDL cholesterol levels, which has a positive effect on cardiovascular health. It is more effective when used in conjunction with a diet. This medication is particularly useful in improving lipid abnormalities classified as type IIa and IIb based on the Fredrickson classification. It helps maintain a healthy blood lipid balance in patients.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual starting dose of Pitavastatin Calcium is 1 to 2 mg once daily. If the decrease in LDL cholesterol levels is insufficient, the dose may be increased up to a maximum of 4 mg per day. The dose should be appropriately adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more based on LDL cholesterol levels, therapeutic goals, and patient responses.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to specific patients. For example, it is not recommended for those who have had allergic reactions to this medication, patients with severely impaired liver function, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and children. Moreover, patients with poor kidney function or hepatic impairment should be particularly cautious when using this medication. Since this drug is primarily metabolized in the liver, if liver function is poor, the drug may accumulate in the body and worsen side effects. Co-administration of this medication with certain drugs, such as cyclosporine or fibrate medications, may lead to serious muscular problems, therefore they should not be taken together. During use, symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness may occur, and if these symptoms arise, you should consult a doctor immediately. Regular liver function tests and blood tests should be conducted, and if any abnormal findings are detected, the use of this medication should be discontinued. This medication can cause various side effects such as muscle damage, liver dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, and allergic reactions, so symptoms should be closely monitored. Elderly patients or those with liver disease or kidney disease require more careful observation when taking this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not take this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed during treatment, it should be stopped immediately. It is not used in children as safety and efficacy haven't been established. This medication should be stored in a place out of reach of children and kept in its original container for safety. In addition, prior to taking this medicine, non-drug treatments such as dietary control and exercise therapy should be attempted first, and blood lipid levels should be regularly checked to evaluate treatment efficacy. Rare, serious side effects such as interstitial lung disease, increased risk of diabetes, and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy have been reported, so caution is needed. Finally, any abnormal symptoms appearing during the course of taking this medication should be reported to medical personnel immediately.
