Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition where the prostate enlarges, causing discomfort in urination. This medication helps reduce the enlarged prostate and aids in improving urinary flow, while also decreasing the frequency of acute urinary retention. It is effective in decreasing the necessity for prostate-related surgery. Overall, it is used to improve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
As finasteride, administer 5 mg orally once a day, regardless of meals. Treatment is necessary for at least 6 months even if symptoms improve after taking this medication.
This medication should not be used in children and women. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should take care not to touch broken pieces of this medication, as it may affect male fetuses. Changes in mental state, such as feelings of depression or thoughts of suicide, may occur while taking this medication; if such symptoms appear, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Avoid this medication if you are hypersensitive to it or have specific genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance. Patients with compromised liver function should be cautious when using this medication, as adverse effects related to sexual function have been mainly reported, such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculatory disorders. Rare cases of breast enlargement or breast pain, and infrequent occurrences of breast cancer, have been reported with long-term use, so regular check-ups are necessary. This medication can affect the risk of prostate cancer, so it is important for men over 55 years of age to receive regular check-ups and monitor PSA levels. While this medication has minimal drug interactions, inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, especially as it may affect male fetuses during pregnancy. The elderly can use this medication without special dosage adjustments, but should follow the physician's instructions. This medication may not show immediate effects, so health status should be regularly checked during treatment, and consult healthcare professionals if any abnormalities occur. No specific antidote exists for overdose, so strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage and keep it out of reach of children.
