Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that primarily occurs in the hip or knee joints, causing joint pain and stiffness. The condition worsens as cartilage wears down, leading to friction between bones. Patients may experience restricted joint movement and discomfort in daily life due to pain. Medications help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, aiding in symptom improvement. Additionally, it is used to maintain joint function and enhance quality of life. This medication is effective in treating osteoarthritis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: Administer 50∼100mg of diacerein orally in 1∼2 divided doses after meals. Adjust the dose appropriately according to symptoms. For patients with a history of loose stools or diarrhea, an initial dose of 50mg once daily is recommended for the first 2-4 weeks, followed by 50mg twice daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, those with inflammatory bowel disease, patients with intestinal obstruction syndrome, individuals with unexplained abdominal pain, and those allergic to this medication or its components should avoid taking it. Additionally, those with liver disease or a history of liver problems, children under 15 years old, and individuals with genetic issues like lactose intolerance should not use this medication. The medication should be used cautiously in patients with a history of small intestine or colon disease, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and elderly individuals over 65, who should particularly reduce their dosage. During use, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loose stools may occur, and long-term usage may lead to serious issues such as gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or perforations. If diarrhea is severe, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can occur, so if these symptoms appear, stop taking the medication immediately and consult with a doctor. Skin symptoms such as itching, rashes, and eczema may occur, and liver function abnormalities can rarely arise, making it important to periodically monitor liver health. When using this medication for a long time, it is essential to follow the doctor's instructions, and it is recommended not to take it with antidiarrheal agents if experiencing diarrhea symptoms. Furthermore, the absorption of this medication may be hindered if taken with antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, or salt, so a minimum interval of 2 hours should be maintained when taking these medications. Caution is also needed when taken with diuretics, as it may enhance the diuretic effect, increasing the risk of dehydration or hypokalemia. Being careful when taking with cardiac glycosides is important due to an increased risk of arrhythmias. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking this medication as the effects on the fetus or newborn are not known. Lastly, overdose may lead to severe diarrhea, in which case necessary treatments, including electrolyte replenishment, should be administered.
