This medicine is used to treat osteoporosis that may occur in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a disease that increases the risk of fractures due to weakened bone strength. Therefore, it helps to maintain strong bones and enhance bone density. This medication can reduce the risk of fractures and help maintain healthy bones.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet regularly once a month on the same day in the morning, at least 1 hour before consuming food, beverages (excluding water), or other oral medications or dietary supplements (including calcium). This medication must be swallowed upright or sitting straight with a sufficient amount (180 to 240 mL) of water, and do not lie down for 60 minutes after taking. Mineral water may reduce the absorption of this medication.

Child dose

Efficacy and safety in pediatric patients under 18 years have not been studied.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients with allergies to this medication or its components, untreated hypocalcemia, patients who cannot sit or stand upright for more than 60 minutes, or those who have difficulties swallowing food due to esophageal dysfunction. Additionally, as this medication contains lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolism disorders should not take this medicine. It should be administered with caution to patients with severe renal insufficiency, and in such cases, medical judgment is required. While taking this medication, side effects such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, and rash may occur, which are usually mild to moderate symptoms and often do not require discontinuation of the treatment. Rarely, symptoms like esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, esophageal strictures, dizziness, and low back pain may occur, and if these symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary. This medication has been reported to have side effects related to eye inflammation, so if any unusual symptoms appear in the eyes, inform a specialist. Moreover, serious skeletal side effects, such as osteonecrosis of the jaw, may rarely occur, so it is best to consult a doctor before receiving dental treatment and to avoid dental treatment during therapy whenever possible. Food or calcium, aluminum, magnesium, iron, etc. may interfere with the absorption of this medication, so at least 1 hour should pass after taking this medication before consuming these foods or drugs. Pregnant or nursing women are advised not to use this medication, and safety for children or adolescents under 18 years has not been established. When taking this medicine, any hypocalcemia or bone metabolic disorders should be treated, and adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is necessary. Ensure to take the medication in the correct position, and if symptoms like difficulty swallowing, pain, chest pain, or heartburn appear, immediately discontinue use and consult a physician. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or hypocalcemia may occur, thus it is important not to induce vomiting and the patient should maintain an upright position. The effect of this medication on driving or operating machinery is not known, so caution is necessary. Finally, keep this medication out of reach of children and dispose of any unused medicine properly to prevent environmental contamination.
