Reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improves hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of conditions related to heart and blood vessels, including myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and chronic stable angina. It is particularly effective for adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors and patients with type 2 diabetes, and it also lowers the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. Additionally, it is used to control blood lipid levels by improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia. It helps lower serum cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with hypercholesterolemia when used in conjunction with dietary measures. Overall, this drug is used to improve and prevent risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for treating hyperlipidemia is 10 mg once daily, and for patients needing greater LDL cholesterol reduction, treatment may start with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosing range is from 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, and lipid levels should be analyzed to adjust the dose within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17) is 10 mg once a day, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg per day. Dose adjustment should occur with an interval of 4 weeks or more between treatments.
This medication may cause muscle-related symptoms, so if you experience severe muscle pain or weakness, you should stop taking it immediately and consult your doctor. If there is a significant increase in muscle enzyme levels or if myopathy is suspected, the medication should be discontinued. Patients with liver function issues or liver diseases should not take this medication, and if any liver dysfunction symptoms occur while taking it, they should seek medical attention immediately. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Children, especially those under 10 years of age, cannot take this medication, and adolescents over 10 years should use it cautiously under medical supervision. Individuals with a history of alcoholism or liver disease should exercise caution when taking this medication. This medication may interact with several other medications, so if you are taking other drugs, you must inform your doctor or pharmacist. Particular caution is required when used with certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV treatments, and some antihypertensive medications. It is important to regularly check liver function and muscle enzyme levels through blood tests while taking this medication. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so treatment will depend on symptoms, and close monitoring of liver function and muscle state is necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored safely in its original container.
