Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also effective in reducing the risk of vascular surgery or angina. Furthermore, it lowers the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, hospitalization due to congestive heart failure, and angina in patients who actually have coronary heart disease. It is used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol, thereby improving blood lipid levels. It is particularly used as adjunct therapy in patients with dyslipidemia who do not respond to diet or in those with certain familial hypercholesterolemia. Moreover, it is effective in lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Therefore, this medication is used to improve patient health through the management of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
Hyperlipidemia: The recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. For patients requiring greater reductions in LDL cholesterol levels, treatment may be initiated with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dose range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed and dosages adjusted within 2 to 4 weeks of initiation and/or dose adjustment. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing regimen is 10 to 80 mg once daily, either used in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or administered when such lipid-lowering treatments are not available.
Pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17): The recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg daily. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer.
