Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and angina in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease or patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is effective in reducing the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarctions, fatal and non-fatal strokes, and hospitalization due to heart failure in adult patients with clinical evidence. In the treatment of hyperlipidemia, it helps to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride levels and increase HDL cholesterol. It is especially used as an adjunct to dietary therapy for patients with various dyslipidemias, including familial hypercholesterolemia. It is also effectively used to lower cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10-17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
1. Hyperlipidemia The recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; however, for patients requiring greater reduction of LDL cholesterol, it can be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dose range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and response, and lipid levels should be analyzed 2-4 weeks after initiation or after dose adjustments.
2. Pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) The recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted according to the treatment goals of the patient.
This medication can cause muscle problems, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, stop taking it immediately and consult a doctor. Avoid using this medication if you are allergic, have severe liver disease, muscle disease, are pregnant or may become pregnant, or are under 10 years old. Patients with liver or kidney function problems should use this medication with caution and it is important to have regular liver function tests. This medication interacts with many other drugs; if you are currently taking any medications, be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist. Particularly, caution is needed when taken with certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV treatments, some antihypertensives, oral contraceptives, grapefruit juice, etc. If you experience symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, or fever while taking this medication, you should immediately inform a healthcare professional; in severe cases, it may be necessary to discontinue the medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate birth control methods while taking it. Care should be taken when administering this drug to children and the elderly as they may have a higher risk of side effects. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so you should visit a medical institution immediately for treatment of symptoms and have regular tests for liver function and muscle condition. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container, and it is safer not to change the container arbitrarily.
