This medication should not be used in certain patients. For instance, patients who are allergic to this drug or its components, patients with untreated hypocalcemia, patients who cannot remain upright for more than 60 minutes, patients with esophageal problems that slow the passage of food, and patients with genetic issues like lactose intolerance should not be treated with this drug. Care should be taken when administering this drug to patients with severe renal impairment. This medication may cause gastrointestinal irritation, leading to symptoms such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In addition, adverse reactions such as headache, myalgia, arthralgia, and rash have been reported. In some patients, flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and fatigue may occur temporarily. If symptoms such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcer, dysphagia, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn occur during usage, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. When used in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, gastrointestinal irritation may increase, hence caution is needed. A serious side effect called osteonecrosis of the jaw may occur rarely, so if dental treatment is needed, a dental examination should be done in advance and a treatment plan established. Moreover, this medication may increase the risk of atypical fractures in specific areas, so if there is pain in the thigh or groin, an immediate evaluation by a physician is necessary. This drug may have its absorption hindered if taken with food, milk, calcium supplements, or antacids, so do not consume any other food or drugs for at least 1 hour after taking it.
