Improvement of pancreatic exocrine dysfunction
This medication is used for pancreatic exocrine dysfunction. Pancreatic exocrine dysfunction refers to a condition where there is a lack of digestive enzymes, resulting in impaired digestion, and this medication helps to supplement the necessary digestive enzymes to aid digestion and improve nutrient absorption. Therefore, it helps to alleviate symptoms due to indigestion or nutritional deficiencies.
The dose always depends on the severity of pancreatic impairment and the composition of the meal. Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older: The recommended dose is 20,000 ∼ 40,000 EP units of lipase activity from pancreatin powder per meal. Depending on the degree of indigestion, the required amount may be considerably higher. In particular, in patients with cystic fibrosis, the dose of enzymes required for adequate fat absorption should not be exceeded, and the amount and composition of meals should be taken into account. The dose should be increased cautiously and in association with improvement in symptoms (e.g., steatorrhea, abdominal pain). Do not exceed 15,000 ∼ 20,000 EP units of lipase activity per kg of body weight per day or 4,000 EP units per g of fat intake. Take this drug with plenty of water during or immediately after a meal. Chewing this drug or opening the capsule may reduce its efficacy, and the release of enzymes in the mouth may damage the oral mucosa. Therefore, swallow this drug whole. If swallowing the capsule intact is difficult (e.g., for children or older adults), open the capsule, mix its contents with a liquid or soft food (pH < 5.5), and take immediately. The contents must be swallowed immediately without chewing. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease.
Children aged 4 years and under 12 years: Start with a weight-based dose of 500 EP units of lipase activity from pancreatin powder per kg of body weight per meal.
This medication should not be taken by individuals allergic to beef or pork or who have hypersensitivity to any of its components. Additionally, patients with acute pancreatitis or those with an acute exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis should avoid this medication. The contents of the capsule should not be chewed, as doing so may damage the oral mucosa. Individuals taking other medications should consult with a physician or pharmacist, and patients with cystic fibrosis may need to exercise caution as they can exhibit symptoms of intestinal blockage. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should avoid using this medication unless absolutely necessary, as its safety has not been established. Nursing mothers should also consult with a specialist before taking this medication, as it may transmit through breast milk. Individuals with a history of gout, renal failure, or hyperuricemia should exercise caution, as this medication may increase serum uric acid levels. Those allergic to porcine proteins may experience severe allergic reactions, so it’s important to consult a physician before taking this medication. Patients taking folic acid preparations should check their folic acid levels, as this medication may interfere with folic acid absorption. In cases where patients are taking diabetes medications such as acarbose or miglitol, it is essential to manage blood glucose levels diligently, as this medication may reduce therapeutic effects. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation may occur while taking this medication, and if any adverse reactions are severe or symptoms do not improve, immediate consultation with a specialist is advised. Particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis, high doses may lead to severe side effects such as fibrosing colonopathy, requiring caution. Always adhere to the prescribed dosages and administration methods, and children should take the medication under parental supervision. This medication is made from components extracted from pig pancreas and has undergone processes to reduce the risk of viral infection, but this cannot be completely excluded. Due to its micropowder form, this medication can irritate the nose and respiratory tract, so care should be taken not to inhale it. Store this medication out of reach of children, in its original container, away from direct sunlight, and in a cool, dry place.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist if taken with folic acid preparations, acarbose, or miglitol.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to prevent air or moisture from entering and should be kept in a cool place at or below 25 degrees Celsius for optimal efficacy.
