Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It improves the reduction in bone density caused by menopause and decreases the risk of fractures. Continuous use helps maintain and strengthen bone health.
Risedronate sodium: 35 mg orally once a week, regardless of meals, taken in the morning. This medication should be taken with a sufficient amount of plain water (170–230 mL) while maintaining an upright position. Do not chew or suck the tablet, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking. If a dose is missed, take it the next morning; do not take two tablets on the same day.
Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years have not been established.
This medication may irritate the mucosa of the esophagus and stomach, so patients with gastrointestinal conditions such as esophagitis or gastric ulcer should take it with caution. It must be taken with a sufficient amount of water while sitting or standing, and patients should not lie down immediately after taking it. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, heartburn, or pain behind the sternum occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Patients with esophageal abnormalities, hypocalcemia, pregnant or nursing women, and those with severe renal impairment should not take this medication. Patients with upper gastrointestinal disease should use this medication cautiously and strictly follow the administration guidelines. It is important to ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D during treatment, and the timing of calcium supplements or antacids should be adjusted as they may interfere with the absorption of this medication. Rare adverse effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw have been reported, so patients, especially cancer patients or those with poor oral hygiene, should receive a dental examination prior to treatment. If taking this medication for a long time, if pain occurs in the thigh or pelvic region, it may indicate an atypical fracture, and the patient should inform their doctor. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid taking this medication, and nursing mothers should either discontinue its use or stop breastfeeding. Overdose may result in hypocalcemia, so caution should be taken to avoid excessive intake, and in case of overdose, immediate consultation with medical personnel is advised. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
