Improvement in blood pressure control in essential hypertension
This medication is used to effectively lower blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension who have difficulty controlling blood pressure with monotherapy. Essential hypertension refers to a condition where blood pressure remains consistently high, and proper management can prevent complications such as heart disease or stroke. This medication helps stabilize blood pressure and improve the health of patients.
The recommended adult dose is one tablet containing valsartan 80 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg, taken once daily and can be taken regardless of meals with a small amount of water. Valsartan 160 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg is applicable if prescribed for blood pressure reduction at that dosage. For patients with renal impairment (creatinine clearance 30 mL/min or more)
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus when taken during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters; therefore, if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be discontinued immediately. Those who are allergic to any ingredients in this medication or sulfonamide drugs, individuals with severely impaired liver or kidney function, and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication. Individuals with electrolyte imbalance, fluid depletion, or kidney or liver function problems should use this medication cautiously, as it may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure. This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery, and if symptoms of low blood pressure occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes should not be taken without consulting with a physician, and regular monitoring of electrolyte levels in the blood is necessary. This medication can interact with other drugs, so caution is advised when taken with lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and potassium-sparing diuretics. The hydrochlorothiazide ingredient may cause sensitivity to sunlight, so it is essential to avoid sun exposure and protect the skin. Additionally, this medication can rarely cause serious allergic reactions, angioedema, hepatitis, or renal failure; if any abnormal symptoms occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and a healthcare professional should be consulted. Elderly patients, as well as those with diabetes, heart failure, or a history of myocardial infarction, should regularly monitor kidney function and blood pressure during treatment. Lastly, the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been adequately established in children, so it is advisable not to use it in pediatric patients.
