Reduction of risks for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and dyslipidemia. Firstly, it helps to reduce the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in diabetic patients. Additionally, it reduces the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, hospitalization due to congestive heart failure, and angina in patients already diagnosed with coronary heart disease. In the treatment of hyperlipidemia, it lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It particularly aids in lipid control in some hypercholesterolemic patients and pediatric patients who are not adequately managed by diet. Thus, it is effectively used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improvement of dyslipidemia.
For treating hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily. For patients requiring further reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, an initial dose of 20 mg or 40 mg once daily may be started. The dosing should be individualized within the range of 10-80 mg once daily based on patient characteristics. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia are prescribed 10-80 mg once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg daily. Doses should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer, according to treatment goals.
