Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Chlorhexidine gluconate should be used in its concentrated form or diluted to the following concentrations depending on the purpose. Disinfection of hands and skin (excluding hand disinfection of healthcare workers and disinfection of surgical site skin): 0.1 to 0.5% aqueous solution Disinfection of medical devices: 0.1 to 0.5% aqueous solution Disinfection of furniture, instruments, and skin areas with wounds: 0.05% aqueous solution.

Precautions

This drug is a disinfectant with chlorhexidine gluconate as its main component. It should not be used in patients with a history of allergic reactions to chlorhexidine. Special caution is required when using it directly on important areas such as the brain, spinal cord, and ears, as it may cause hearing loss or neurological disorders. When used on mucosal areas such as the vagina, bladder, or mouth, severe allergic reactions or shock may occur, so care must be taken. It can cause serious damage if it comes into contact with the eyes, so it must not be allowed to touch the eyes directly. Caution is advised for patients with allergies to other medications or a history of allergic diseases such as asthma. During use, abnormal reactions such as nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and skin rashes may occur, so if these symptoms arise, use should be stopped immediately and medical assistance should be sought. In rare cases, life-threatening anaphylactic shock may occur, so always exercise caution. It is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, as its safety has not been confirmed in animal testing or clinical trials. It should only be used externally; if ingested or injected by mistake, severe side effects may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment. If it gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water, and avoid using it extensively on large areas or inhaling vapors. It should not be used extensively on areas with wounds or burns, especially in preterm infants and newborns, due to a higher risk of systemic side effects. This drug may lose its bactericidal effect when it comes into contact with organic substances such as soap or serum, so medical instruments must be cleaned properly before use. Also, it adheres easily to fabrics or cloth, so it is advisable to replace it with a new solution instead of using it for long periods. When diluting, it is advisable to use clean distilled water, and it should not be used for disinfecting mucosal areas in obstetrics or urology. When applying to wound areas, only sterilized diluted solution should be used, and syringes or catheters that may come into contact with nerves or mucous membranes should be cleaned with sterilized water before use. It is safest to exchange the solution daily. When storing, it should be kept at a proper pH between 5 and 7, taking care not to leave it at high temperatures for extended periods. After opening, it should be used immediately, and any remaining solution should be discarded.
