Treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease
Hyperphosphatemia, which commonly occurs in end-stage renal disease patients, refers to an abnormal increase in the level of phosphorus in the blood. This medication helps to control hyperphosphatemia and maintain phosphorus levels within the normal range. By doing so, it helps prevent complications due to declining kidney function and reduces the risk of decreased bone density and cardiovascular diseases. It also contributes to improving the overall health condition of patients and enhancing their quality of life. It is used in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease.
1) Initial dose: Take 2 tablets orally with each meal. 2) Maintenance dose: Gradually increase the dose until the serum phosphate concentration is 6mg/dl or less, without causing hypercalcemia. The usual dose is 3-4 tablets with meals.
This medication should not be administered to patients with hypercalcemia. Taking this medication can cause elevated serum calcium levels, which may lead to symptoms such as constipation, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, confusion, decreased consciousness, and coma may occur, so if symptoms are severe, the patient should immediately stop taking the medication and consult with healthcare professionals. At the beginning of treatment, the proper dosage should be established and adjusted as necessary. In cases of overdose, there is a risk of hypercalcemia, so during the initial treatment period, serum calcium levels should be monitored with blood tests twice a week. Because elevated calcium levels can cause heart rhythm abnormalities, this medication is not used in patients taking the cardiac medication digitalis. Blood phosphorus levels should also be regularly monitored to maintain appropriate levels. It is advisable not to take unprescribed antacids concurrently. The combined values of calcium and phosphorus in the blood should be managed to not exceed certain standards. Additionally, this medication may decrease the effectiveness of tetracycline antibiotics, so caution is needed when taken together. In pregnant individuals, the effects of this medication on the fetus are not clearly understood; it should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks. In children, due to insufficient confirmation of safety and efficacy, caution should be exercised in its use. Lastly, patients should be adequately educated about the symptoms of hypercalcemia to recognize them themselves and take precautions.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air or moisture from entering. It is important to maintain the storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius at room temperature. This will help maintain the effectiveness of the medication for a longer period.
