This medication is used to improve atherosclerotic symptoms in adult patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease. It also alleviates symptoms such as cardiovascular-related mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, or persistent ischemia in patients with acute coronary syndrome who have undergone medical treatment, coronary intervention procedures, or coronary artery bypass surgery. Furthermore, it assists in reducing the risk of stroke and thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation when vitamin K antagonists are unsuitable and bleeding risk is low. This medication is effective in lowering the risk of various cardiovascular diseases and improving symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

1. For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, administer clopidogrel orally at a dose of 75 mg once daily. 2. For patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-Q wave myocardial infarction), initiate the therapy with a loading dose of 300 mg on the first day, then maintain with 75 mg orally once daily. At this time, aspirin 75 mg should be co-administered.

Precautions

This medication helps blood flow by preventing platelets in the blood from clumping together. It may not be effective enough in individuals with reduced function of a specific enzyme (CYP2C19) due to genetic factors. In such cases, alternative treatments should be considered. Additionally, concomitant use of medications that activate certain enzymes may increase the risk of bleeding, so such combinations should be avoided. This medication should not be used in patients with bleeding, severe liver damage, breastfeeding women, or those with specific genetic disorders. During administration, there is a risk of bleeding, so if bleeding symptoms are suspected, medical personnel should be informed immediately. The use of this medication may need to be stopped in case of surgery or trauma. Caution is warranted if this medication is used alongside anticoagulants such as warfarin, as this increases the risk of bleeding. Moreover, it may cause side effects like gastrointestinal bleeding, skin rashes, and a reduction in blood cell counts, so if any unusual symptoms occur, consultation with a doctor should be sought immediately. While the risk to the fetus during pregnancy is not significant, caution is needed due to the bleeding risk, and consideration should be given to whether to discontinue breastfeeding since the medication may pass into breast milk. This medication is not recommended for children as safety and efficacy have not been established. For elderly patients or those with impaired kidney or liver function, there may be a higher risk of bleeding, thus dosage adjustment and careful monitoring are necessary. In case of overdose, the risk of bleeding significantly increases, requiring immediate hospital care for appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and not transferred to another container for safety.
