This medication is used to improve atherosclerotic symptoms such as death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, stroke, or refractory ischemia when administered in conjunction with clopidogrel and aspirin to patients with acute coronary syndrome who have undergone or are scheduled to undergo coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass surgery, or in cases of unstable angina or non-Q wave myocardial infarction. It is also applicable to atrial fibrillation patients who have one or more vascular risk factors, for whom vitamin K antagonist treatment is not suitable and who have a low risk of bleeding, to help reduce the risks of thrombosis such as stroke and thromboembolism. Therefore, this medication is used very effectively for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Precautions

This medication prevents thrombus formation by inhibiting blood coagulation. When taking this medication, it may take longer to stop bleeding, so if there is severe or prolonged bleeding, you should inform your doctor immediately. Before undergoing surgery or taking new medications, be sure to inform your healthcare provider that you are currently taking this medication. Individuals with genetically reduced function of a specific enzyme (CYP2C19) may experience decreased efficacy of this medication and may have an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. In such cases, it is crucial to consult with a physician to determine an appropriate treatment method. Co-administration of this medication with certain drugs (e.g., CYP2C19 inducers) may increase the risk of bleeding, therefore combination therapy is not recommended. Furthermore, individuals who consume more than three alcoholic beverages daily may have a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding while taking this medication, so they must consult with their doctor or pharmacist. This medication should not be administered to patients with bleeding disorders or a history of gastrointestinal bleeding, severe liver or kidney impairments, severe heart failure, those in late pregnancy, or nursing mothers. Patients with a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or blood disorders should use this medication cautiously and should notify their healthcare provider immediately if any bleeding symptoms occur. In conditions with an increased risk of bleeding, this medication should be discontinued 5 to 7 days before surgery, and co-administration with other drugs that enhance bleeding risk should also be approached with caution. This medication is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, especially during viral infections, due to the risk of Reye's syndrome from aspirin components. During administration, alcohol consumption should be avoided or minimized as it may increase the risk of bleeding. Additionally, this medication may cause allergic reactions, skin rashes, blood abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, so if any abnormal symptoms appear, it is crucial to consult with healthcare professionals immediately. In surgical or emergency situations, platelet transfusions may be necessary to reverse the effects of this medication. This medication does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, but caution is necessary considering the risk of bleeding. Use during the early to mid stages of pregnancy should be based on a doctor's judgment, and it should not be administered during the late stages of pregnancy. It is safest not to take this medication while breastfeeding.
