Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status.
Zinc supplementation is an important treatment method because patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) may become zinc deficient. Zinc is essential for wound healing and the maintenance of immune function, so appropriate supplementation helps the patient's recovery. Therefore, zinc supplementation during TPN is used to improve nutritional status and prevent complications.
Should be used according to a doctor's prescription, adjusting dosage based on plasma trace element levels. Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 ∼ 4 mg/day Adult patients with fluid loss from the small intestine: an additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (amount of excretion) Acute burn conditions: 4.5 ∼ 6 mg/day
Pediatric patients under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day
This medication should not be injected directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. The reason is that administering it this way can cause phlebitis and there is a risk of rapid zinc loss through the kidneys. The zinc content in this medication is very low, so toxic symptoms are rarely observed. It is important to maintain aseptic conditions when mixing this medication, especially when mixing with TPN solutions, it is recommended to handle it in a specialized environment called a laminar flow cabinet. Before administration, it is essential to visually check for any sediments or discoloration in the non-oral medications. Since zinc administration can decrease copper levels, it's necessary to regularly check the plasma concentrations of copper and zinc to guide dosing. This medication is primarily excreted through the small intestine and kidneys, so caution is required for patients with impaired kidney or small intestine function, as zinc may accumulate in the body. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should administer this medication only when the therapeutic benefits are deemed to outweigh the risks, as zinc can be transferred to the baby through the placenta and breast milk. In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and motor coordination disorders, and in severe cases, it may be fatal. Calcium intake may help prevent zinc toxicity. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should be stored in its packaging in a dry and room temperature environment. Since no preservatives are included, any unused portion must be discarded for safety.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to protect it from air and moisture. It is important to maintain a storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius to preserve its efficacy for a long time.
