Precautions

This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so caution is required. Particularly, if there is a sudden decline in kidney function, the drug may accumulate in the body, increasing the risk of lactic acidosis. If symptoms of dehydration or severe diarrhea, vomiting, or fever occur, it is advisable to temporarily discontinue the medication and consult a physician. Moreover, care must be taken when using this medication in conjunction with other drugs that may affect kidney function. This medication may be associated with increased cardiovascular mortality, thus careful monitoring of the patient’s condition before and during treatment is necessary. It should not be administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, acute metabolic acidosis, severe liver or kidney function impairment, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Elderly patients, those with malnutrition, irregular eating habits, or those engaging in intense physical activity are at higher risk of hypoglycemia and should be especially cautious while taking this medication. During the initial phase of treatment, side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, metallic taste, or skin rash may occur, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to a physician. This medication may induce hypoglycemic symptoms, so if symptoms occur, immediate intake of carbohydrates is necessary, and seek medical assistance if necessary. Regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and if abnormalities are detected, the medication should be discontinued or adjusted, and interactions with other medications should also be carefully monitored. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should not use this medication, and switching to insulin therapy is recommended if necessary. In children or elderly patients, safety and efficacy should be considered more cautiously. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical attention, and regular meals, exercise, and monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function are necessary during treatment. Excessive alcohol intake should be avoided while taking this medication, and caution should be taken when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer it to another container.
