This medication is used to effectively lower blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases in patients aged 55 and older who have a history of cardiovascular disease such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, or stroke, or those at high risk for cardiovascular disease like patients with diabetes. Thus, this medication is beneficial not only for managing hypertension but also for reducing cardiovascular disease risk.

How to take

Adult dose

Essential Hypertension: Telmisartan, 40 mg taken orally once daily with water, may be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg taken once daily may also be effective. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 80 mg taken once daily. Maximum blood pressure-lowering effect appears 4-8 weeks after treatment initiation. Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease Risk: 80 mg taken orally once daily with water.

Precautions

This medication can pose a serious risk to the fetus during pregnancy, thus should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Pregnant or nursing women, as well as individuals who are allergic to this medication or its components, should not use it. Patients with severe liver dysfunction or biliary obstruction should also not take this medication. Patients with a history of angioedema or those with diabetes and severe kidney impairment should avoid using this medication in combination with certain drugs. Elderly patients, those with high serum potassium levels, or those with mild liver dysfunction should use this medication with caution. Patients with cardiac valve disease, ischemic heart disease, or cerebrovascular disease also require caution. Patients with impaired kidney function, especially those with renal artery hypertension, should be careful as kidney function may worsen while taking this medication. This medication may lower blood pressure excessively, which could lead to dizziness or fainting, thus caution is required. Regular blood tests to monitor serum potassium and creatinine levels are important. This medication may interact with other antihypertensive drugs, so it is essential to consult with a physician or pharmacist. Particularly, caution is needed when used with lithium, ramipril, diuretics, NSAIDs, etc. Take care when driving or operating machinery as there is a risk of dizziness or fainting. This medication contains sorbitol and is not suitable for patients with fructose intolerance. Overdose may cause hypotension, dizziness, acute renal failure, etc., and immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication is not recommended for children as safety and efficacy have not been established in this population. Keep this medication out of reach of children, and avoid transferring to other containers.
