Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes, as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy. The combination of glimepiride and metformin effectively lowers blood sugar, assisting in diabetes management.
This medication is administered 1-2 times daily before or with meals. The dose can be adjusted based on each patient’s current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, which should be monitored through appropriate blood sugar tests. Treatment typically starts at a low dose, with adjustments made according to the patient’s current medications and blood sugar levels. The initial daily dose is Glimepiride/Metformin Hydrochloride 2mg/500mg.
This medication may pose a risk of severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia; therefore, treatment should be temporarily suspended and a doctor consulted if there is a sudden deterioration in renal function or dehydration. Especially patients with reduced renal function or severe liver dysfunction, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women, should not take this medication. Additionally, caution is required for use during acute infections, pre- and post-surgical periods, severe trauma, malnutrition states, etc., and patients at high risk of hypoglycemia should closely monitor their blood sugar status during the initial stages of treatment. Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.) may occur during treatment, and if these symptoms are severe, immediate medical attention should be sought to avoid the risk of dehydration. Rarely, allergic reactions, blood abnormalities, or vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so regular blood tests and checks for vitamin B12 levels are recommended. This medication can interact with other drugs, so inform healthcare providers of any other medications being taken, especially those that may affect renal function. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects of this medication, so excessive consumption should be avoided. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, switching to insulin therapy is considered safer. Children and the elderly should monitor their renal function and overall health during treatment, particularly the elderly are at higher risk for side effects due to reduced renal function, necessitating regular kidney function tests. Overdose may result in hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical attention, and possibly blood dialysis treatment. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood sugar, hematologic values, and kidney function is necessary to ensure safety and effectiveness. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Lastly, this medication should always be taken according to a physician's prescription and instructions, and immediate consultation with medical personnel is crucial if any unusual symptoms arise.
