Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can effectively regulate blood sugar by taking glimepiride and metformin together as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapies. This improves the patient's blood sugar management and helps in the prevention of complications.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered 1 to 2 times daily before or with meals. The dosage may be adjusted considering each patient's current therapy, efficacy, and tolerability, and appropriate blood sugar monitoring should be performed. Typically, treatment is initiated at a low dose, and adjustments can be made based on the currently prescribed medications and blood sugar levels. In clinical trials, the initial daily dose was glimepiride/metformin hydrochloride 2 mg/500 mg.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia; therefore, if there is a rapid decline in kidney function or dehydration symptoms, use should be temporarily suspended and consult a doctor. This medication may increase the risk of certain cardiovascular conditions, so patients should consult with their doctor thoroughly before starting treatment and should be closely monitored during therapy. Patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, acute metabolic acidosis, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. There is a high risk of hypoglycemia during the initial dosing, thus, it is essential to maintain regular eating habits, avoid alcohol consumption, and be prepared to promptly manage any hypoglycemic symptoms. Gastrointestinal side effects (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.) may occur during treatment but are usually transient; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. This medication may decrease vitamin B12 levels, so regular blood tests are necessary during long-term use, and supplemental therapy should be administered if needed. Due to many interactions with other medications, it is crucial to consult with a doctor or pharmacist before starting or stopping any new medications, especially when taking drugs that affect kidney function. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant are advised to switch to insulin therapy instead of this medication, and it should be avoided while breastfeeding. In the case of children or the elderly, careful monitoring of kidney function is necessary, along with required dose adjustments and precautions. In the case of overdose, serious side effects such as hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur; if suspected, immediate emergency treatment should be sought, and quick intake of sugar is necessary if hypoglycemia occurs. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of accidents from hypoglycemia or dizziness. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided as it may compromise quality.
