This medication helps lower blood total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It also contributes to improving cardiovascular health by increasing HDL-cholesterol levels, known as good cholesterol. This medication is used as an adjunct in patients undergoing dietary therapy to effectively support lipid control. Therefore, it is one of the recommended treatment options for those who need cholesterol and lipid management.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual initial dose is 1 to 2 mg of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the reduction effect on LDL-cholesterol levels is insufficient, the daily dose can be increased to a maximum of 4 mg. Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it is contraindicated in patients with allergies to the components of this drug or impaired liver function, patients with severe liver disease, those taking cyclosporine, patients with myopathy, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and in children. Additionally, caution is needed in patients with reduced kidney function or a history of liver diseases, patients who consume excessive alcohol, elderly patients, and patients with hypothyroidism. In particular, the risk of muscle-related side effects may increase when used in combination with fibrates or niacin. During treatment with this medication, unusual symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, indigestion, rash, and liver function abnormalities may occur, and if these symptoms arise, it is crucial to consult a doctor immediately. Regular liver function tests should be conducted, and if abnormal findings are observed, treatment should be discontinued. This medication should not be administered to pregnant or breastfeeding women, and women of childbearing potential should confirm their pregnancy status before taking it. Furthermore, safety and efficacy have not been established in children or adolescents. If taking other medications during treatment, particularly cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, erythromycin, etc., there may be an increased risk of muscle damage or renal function deterioration, thus it is essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist. Elderly patients may be more prone to adverse reactions due to decreased bodily functions, so caution should be exercised, and dosage adjustments may be necessary if symptoms occur. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
