Improvement of high cholesterol and dyslipidemia
This medication helps to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia while increasing HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) levels. It assists in effectively controlling blood lipid levels when used in conjunction with dietary therapy. This contributes to improving vascular health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this medication is used as an important adjunct for the management of hyperlipidemia.
For adults, the usual initial dose of pitavastatin calcium is 1 to 2 milligrams taken once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased up to a maximum of 4 milligrams per day. The dose should be appropriately adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more based on LDL cholesterol levels, therapeutic goals, and patient response. The therapeutic effect of this medication is maintained with continuous administration.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients with allergies to this drug, those with severely impaired liver function, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and to children. Moreover, patients with poor kidney function, a history of liver disease, and those who consume alcohol excessively should use this medication cautiously. Special attention is required for those with muscle-related disorders or the elderly. This medication may cause side effects such as muscle pain, liver function abnormalities, and allergic reactions, so if symptoms occur, one should consult a physician immediately. Regular liver function tests and blood tests are required, and medication may need to be discontinued if abnormal findings are detected. Additionally, this medication may cause serious side effects when used with certain drugs; therefore, informing healthcare professionals of any other medications being taken is essential. Caution is particularly advised when used concurrently with cyclosporine, fibrate drugs, niacin, and erythromycin. Elderly patients may require dose adjustments due to decreased physiological function, resulting in a higher risk of side effects. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and if taken during pregnancy, it should be discontinued immediately and medical advice sought. This medication has not been proven safe and effective for children, so it is advisable not to use it in this population. Finally, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original packaging to maintain quality.
