This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps prevent and treat kidney disease in patients with hypertension accompanying type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is effective in improving cardiovascular and renal complications associated with hypertension.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, take 150 mg orally once a day as Irbesartan, and if the effect is insufficient, it can be increased up to 300 mg. For diabetic nephropathy in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, it is recommended to start with 150 mg orally once a day and increase to 300 mg for maintenance. Elderly patients (aged 75 years or older) and patients on dialysis should consider an initial dose of 75 mg.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if used during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients with allergies to this drug or its components, those with severe liver dysfunction, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals with certain hereditary lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, patients with weakened liver function, those with heart valve or muscle problems, and patients with poor kidney function should take this medication cautiously and should have their blood pressure and kidney function monitored frequently as directed by a physician. During the use of this medication, side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, headache, cough, and dyspepsia may occur, but they are generally mild and temporary. However, serious side effects such as angioedema with swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, severe hypotension, kidney failure, liver dysfunction, hypoglycemia, and myalgia may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. This medication may interact with other antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, potassium supplements, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., so patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are taking other medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and nursing should be stopped if this medication is taken while breastfeeding. Safety in children has not been established, so it is not to be administered to children. In case of an overdose, hypotension or cardiac arrhythmia may occur, so care should be taken not to exceed the dosage, and if an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers. Caution is required when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or fatigue may occur.
