Efficacy & effects

Auxiliary effect in ophthalmic surgery (cataract, corneal transplantation, glaucoma)

View approved original text

This drug is used as an adjunct in various ophthalmic surgeries, including aiding in intraocular lens implantation during cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, and glaucoma surgeries. It helps facilitate recovery after surgery and increases the success rate of the procedures. It is effective as an adjunct for those undergoing ophthalmic surgeries.

How it is given

Adult administration

For cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, slowly inject the required amount into the anterior chamber of the eye using a needle or cannula before or after lens removal. Inject before intraocular and extraocular cataract surgeries to optimize corneal endothelial protective effects. During corneal transplantation, fill the anterior chamber with this drug until the corneal graft is removed and the surface of the cornea is leveled, then place the donor graft and suture it. During glaucoma filtration surgery, inject this drug to maintain anterior chamber volume.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to the ingredients or drugs in the protein family. Eye-related side effects may occasionally include increased intraocular pressure or, rarely, inflammation inside the eye. Additionally, corneal edema, opacification, bleeding, new blood vessel growth in the iris, or ulceration may occur. Symptoms such as eye pain, itching, and blurred vision may also appear, so caution is advised. After using this drug, opacification may occur on the surface of the intraocular lens, and phosphates in the additive have been reported to cause rare occurrences of calcification of the cornea in patients with severe corneal damage. Particularly immediately after surgery, careful monitoring of intraocular pressure is essential, and appropriate treatment should be administered if pressure increases. After surgery, it is advisable to cleanse or aspirate this drug as much as possible. Before performing ultrasonic emulsification and aspiration, a space filled with perfusion fluid must be created between the lens and this drug through aspiration perfusion. Surgical instruments should not be cleaned with solutions containing quaternary ammonium compounds such as benzalkonium chloride, and there may be contraindicated medications when used with this drug, so consulting a medical professional is necessary. This drug is intended for ophthalmic use only and must never be injected intravascularly. Before use, it should be kept refrigerated and allowed to reach room temperature for about 30 minutes. After opening, it should only be used once, and any remaining drug should be discarded. During injection, care should be taken to avoid air entering beneath the iris, and injection should be performed slowly and carefully, as excessive injection may lead to an increase in intraocular pressure.

Mild side effects

Increased intraocular pressure, inflammatory response, corneal edema, corneal opacification, anterior chamber bleeding, iris neovascularization, iris posterior ulcer, conjunctival adhesion deficiency, mydriasis, lens opacification, pain, itching, blurred vision, corneal functional impairment, opacification of intraocular lens surface, corneal calcification

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

This drug should be stored in a sealed container to protect it from air and light exposure. It is important to avoid direct sunlight and store it in a cool place.
