Precautions

This medication is primarily used as an antidepressant for the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. During treatment with this drug, the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior may increase particularly among young individuals aged 18 to 24, so both the patient and caregivers should closely monitor for such changes. This medication can cause a serious side effect known as serotonin syndrome, which may manifest as changes in mental state, high fever, muscle spasms, and nausea. If any suspected symptoms occur, it is crucial to notify healthcare professionals immediately. This medication should not be taken in conjunction with certain drugs, particularly MAO inhibitors, as it can be dangerous. Patients with severely impaired liver function or hypersensitivity to this medication should not use it; for patients with mildly impaired liver, dose adjustments may be necessary. Patients with epilepsy may be at increased risk of seizures, hence caution is advised when taking this medication, and treatment should be stopped immediately if symptoms occur. This medication may affect activities requiring attention, such as driving or operating machinery, so caution should be taken during its use, particularly when used with other sedatives. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must consult with a physician before taking this medication as it may affect the fetus, and breastfeeding mothers should also consider the use of this medication carefully. During treatment, regular checks for blood sugar, liver function, and heart rhythm should be conducted, and caution should be taken for side effects like bleeding tendencies or hyponatremia. Abruptly stopping this medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms, therefore the dosage should be gradually reduced according to a physician’s instructions. In case of overdose, severe side effects may occur; therefore, immediate medical attention is required. Additionally, this medication has significant interactions with other drugs, so any other medications being taken should be reported to healthcare providers.
