This medication is used to effectively control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension where blood pressure control is insufficient with monotherapy.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended adult dosage is 1 tablet daily of valsartan 80 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg, taken with a small amount of water regardless of meals. Valsartan 160 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg is applied if prescribed for blood pressure reduction. No dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance 30 mL/min or more).

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Individuals with allergies to the ingredients of this medication or sulfonamide drugs, as well as pregnant or potentially pregnant women, should not take this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, as well as those with specific liver or kidney diseases, should not take this medication. This medication lowers blood pressure, so patients with hypotension or electrolyte abnormalities, and those with heart or cerebrovascular diseases should use caution when taking it. In particular, elderly patients, diabetic patients, lupus patients, and heart failure patients should frequently check renal function and electrolyte status while taking this medication. The hydrochlorothiazide component may increase sensitivity to sunlight and the risk of skin cancer, so exposure to sunlight should be avoided and skin condition should be closely monitored. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur when taking this medication, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Potassium supplements or potassium-containing medications should not be taken without discussing with a doctor, and blood potassium levels should be regularly monitored. There may be interactions with other medications, so especially those taking lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and other antihypertensive medications should certainly consult with a physician. This medication has not been shown to be safe and effective in children, so it is best not to use it. Overdose may present with hypotension, arrhythmia, electrolyte abnormalities, etc., and if symptoms occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should be stored away from moisture and direct sunlight, and kept out of reach of children.
