This medication is used as an adjunct therapy for patients with hypertension whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy. It helps effectively lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of complications, and improve overall cardiovascular health. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of hypertension.

How to take

Adult dose

The usual dosage of this medication is one tablet containing 50 mg of losartan potassium and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide, taken once daily. A dosage exceeding 100 mg of losartan potassium and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide per day is not recommended. Patients whose blood pressure is not controlled with monotherapy of losartan or hydrochlorothiazide should start on one tablet of losartan potassium 50 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be used in patients with certain diseases or those who have hypersensitivity to the medication. For example, patients with anuria, severe liver impairment, significantly reduced kidney function, and pregnant women may be at risk if they take this medication. Patients with significantly low blood pressure or kidney issues, systemic lupus erythematosus, and older adults should use caution when taking this medication, and they must strictly follow the physician’s instructions. While taking this medication, blood pressure, kidney function, electrolyte levels, etc., should be regularly monitored for any abnormalities, particularly paying attention to electrolyte imbalances such as hypokalemia or hyperkalemia. This medication may make the skin sensitive to sunlight, potentially increasing the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer; therefore, precautions against UV exposure and skin protection should be observed while taking it. Symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, headache, cough, and edema may occur; if severe symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, especially when taking potassium supplements, diuretics, antihypertensives, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or lithium preparations, be sure to inform the physician. Women planning to become pregnant or those who are pregnant should consult healthcare professionals before taking this medication, and breastfeeding women are recommended to avoid taking it or to stop breastfeeding while on this medication. It is recommended not to use this medication in children or adolescents, as safety and efficacy have not been established. While taking this medication, caution is needed when driving or operating machinery, as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. In case of overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure and arrhythmia may appear, and immediate medical attention should be sought.
