This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. It is also applicable to patients over 55 years old who are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, transient ischemic attacks, or evidence of end-organ damage. This drug effectively reduces the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases even when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. Therefore, it plays an important role not only in hypertension management but also in the prevention of cardiovascular complications. Overall, this medication is used for hypertension and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 40 mg of Telmisartan orally once daily with water, without regard to meals. Depending on patient response, 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dosage may be increased up to 80 mg once daily, and the maximum antihypertensive effect occurs 4 to 8 weeks after dosage increase. For risk reduction of cardiovascular diseases, 80 mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and nursing mothers should not take this medication. It is also advisable for patients with severely impaired liver function or issues with bile excretion to avoid this medication. Patients who have had allergic reactions or have a history of hereditary angioedema should also not take it. Diabetic patients or those with moderate to severe renal impairment should not take this medication alongside specific drugs. Caution is also advised for elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, mild liver impairment, and patients with heart valve diseases or cardiac hypertrophy. It is important to regularly monitor blood pressure, renal function, and serum potassium levels when taking this medication. Blood pressure may drop too low, and symptoms like dizziness or fainting may occur, especially in patients on diuretics or high-dose diuretics. This medication may increase the effect when taken with other antihypertensive agents, and the risk of side effects may rise when taken with specific drugs; thus, consultation with a physician is mandatory. Caution is necessary while driving or operating machinery due to potential dizziness or fainting. Overdosage may lead to hypotension, dizziness, acute renal failure, etc., necessitating immediate medical attention. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age and are therefore not recommended. Store the medication out of reach of children, take care to avoid moisture, and it is best to open the packaging just before use.
