Effectiveness in treating essential hypertension and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension, helping to control blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It can be given as an alternative medication when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. It is useful in high-risk diabetic patients aged over 55 who have a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks, or have damage to end organs, in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this medication is effectively used not only for blood pressure management but also for the prevention and risk reduction of cardiovascular diseases.
1. Essential Hypertension As Telmisartan, 40 mg should be taken orally once daily with water, regardless of meals. In some patients, 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect typically occurs 4 - 8 weeks after dose increase. This medication may be used in combination with thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide for additional effect.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients with a known allergy to this medication, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver dysfunction or bile obstruction, hereditary angioedema patients, and patients with diabetes or severe kidney dysfunction should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, liver disorders, heart valve diseases, ischemic heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, renal artery hypertension, and severe kidney disorders should use this medication with caution. Various adverse reactions may occur while taking this medication, and patients should consult a healthcare professional immediately if they experience significantly low blood pressure, hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction, angioedema, liver abnormalities, interstitial lung disease, or rhabdomyolysis. Patients with impaired renal function should regularly check their serum potassium and creatinine levels, and correct their blood volume and sodium status in advance if they are at risk of hypotension. This medication can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect when used with other antihypertensive agents, so caution is required. Particularly, the risk of side effects may increase when used concurrently with other RAAS agents, potassium-sparing diuretics, NSAIDs, lithium, etc., so it is advisable to consult a doctor. It should never be taken during pregnancy, and it is also recommended to avoid taking it while breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 18 years, so it is not recommended. In elderly patients, this medication must be administered with caution due to the risk of excessive blood pressure lowering leading to stroke. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may appear, requiring immediate medical treatment. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored sealed until the time of administration.
