Efficacy & effects

Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity

  • Exogenous obesity
View approved original text

This medication is used in patients with exogenous obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater and in those with BMI 27 or greater with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia that do not respond adequately to appropriate weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. It serves as a short-term adjunct therapy for weight reduction programs primarily based on exercise, behavioral modification, and calorie restriction, and should be taken alone without combining with other appetite suppressants. This medication helps in weight loss and contributes to maintaining a healthy weight.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and should only be taken alone for a short period. It is not recommended to take this medication in combination with other drugs for weight loss due to safety concerns. If symptoms such as dyspnea, chest pain, syncope, or leg edema, which are early signs of a serious lung disease called primary pulmonary hypertension, occur during treatment, it is essential to inform a physician immediately. This medication may also be associated with valvular heart diseases, so its long-term high-dose use or concurrent use with other appetite suppressants should be avoided. Individuals with advanced arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, severe hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, severe anxiety states, or a history of substance abuse should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and children under 16 years of age should also avoid using this medication. Diabetic patients and those with mild hypertension should use this medication with caution, and insulin dosage adjustments may be necessary for diabetic patients.
