Weight loss adjunct therapy for patients with obesity (high body mass index and risk factors)
This medication assists obese patients who do not respond to proper dietary or exercise regimens. It is used as a short-term adjunct for the treatment of exogenous obesity based on caloric restriction, especially in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above or in those with a BMI of 27 or above having risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. It should only be used alone without combining with other appetite suppressants. This medication can help obese patients lose weight and is expected to have a positive effect on improving health.
As Phendimetrazine Tartrate, take 35 mg once 2 to 3 times a day orally, one hour before meals. The dosage should be the minimum effective dose, individually adjusted per response. In some patients, 17.5 mg once per day may be appropriate. Do not exceed 70 mg once, or take more than 3 times a day. Use for a short duration (within 4 weeks), and if sufficient weight loss is achieved within the first 4 weeks, treatment may continue.
This medication should not be used with other appetite suppressants as it can cause severe heart problems, so it must be used alone. It should only be used for short periods when controlling obesity due to external factors, and taking it with other weight loss medications may not be safe. It can increase the risk of a rare condition called pulmonary arterial hypertension; thus, if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or fainting occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Due to risks associated with heart valve diseases, an evaluation of heart condition through testing is necessary before starting this medication, and patients with heart murmurs or valvular diseases should not take this drug. Patients with specific conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, mental anxiety, or history of substance abuse should not receive this medication. Children under 16 years old and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should also not take this medication. Patients with mild hypertension, diabetics, and breastfeeding women should use this drug cautiously, and diabetic patients may need insulin dosage adjustments. This medication can cause side effects such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, indigestion, changes in sexual drive, etc. Therefore, patients should consult a doctor if they experience unusual symptoms. Tolerance to the appetite-suppressing effect can develop quickly, so if efficacy decreases, do not increase the dose but discontinue use. This medication affects the central nervous system, so caution is required while driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, changes in blood pressure, or vomiting may occur, so prescribed dosages must be strictly adhered to. The safety of this drug has not been established for pregnant or breastfeeding women, nor has it been confirmed for children. This medication is classified as a narcotic, which may have addictive and dependency properties. Suddenly stopping after long-term high-dose use can result in extreme fatigue and depression. Thus, this drug must be used cautiously and under the strict guidance of a physician, and it should be stored securely out of reach of children.
