This medication is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis that may occur in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a condition where bones weaken, leading to an increased risk of fractures. This medication helps maintain bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures.

How to take

Adult dose

Risedronate sodium 150 mg orally once a month. Food may interfere with the absorption of this medication; therefore, it should be taken at least 30 minutes before the first food or beverage other than water during the day for adequate absorption. This medication should be taken with a sufficient amount of plain water (170-230 mL) while in an upright position. It should not be chewed or sucked on, and you should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, so special caution should be exercised in patients with esophageal or gastric issues. Patients with esophageal strictures or achalasia, hypocalcemia, severe renal impairment, pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication. It should be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and you should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. This medication can cause serious esophageal adverse reactions such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, or esophageal obstruction, so if symptoms occur, you should stop taking it immediately and consult a physician. Additionally, it is important to intake sufficient calcium and vitamin D, and if there are existing hypocalcemia or other bone metabolism disorders, treatment should be received first. Rarely, serious side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw or atypical fractures may occur with prolonged use, so if any unusual symptoms arise, consult a specialist. This medication may interact with other drugs, so be careful not to take it with drugs or food that contain calcium, magnesium, or iron. If pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid taking this medication or consult a specialist. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established for children or adolescents under 18 years old. In case of overdose, blood calcium and phosphorus levels may decrease, and immediate treatment should be sought if symptoms appear. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be stored in a container different from the original.
