This medicine helps control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It is also used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular diseases in high-risk diabetes patients with a history of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or those with damage to peripheral organs. This effectively reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improves health.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, telmisartan should be taken orally once daily at a dose of 40 mg with water and can be taken regardless of meals. It may also be effective at a dose of 20 mg once daily, and it can be increased to 80 mg once daily if necessary. Maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is usually observed 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. For reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, 80 mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm, especially to the fetus and newborn, during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used in women who are allergic to this medication or its ingredients, are pregnant or breastfeeding, in patients with severe liver impairment, hereditary angioedema, and certain kidney diseases. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, mild to moderate liver impairment, heart valve disease, ischemic heart disease or cerebrovascular disease should use this medication with caution. This medication may cause various adverse reactions, particularly low blood pressure, worsening kidney function, hyperkalemia, angioedema, and liver function abnormalities; therefore, patients should consult their healthcare provider immediately upon experiencing symptoms. Patients with impaired kidney function or reduced blood volume should improve their condition before taking this medication, and it is important to regularly check blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels. This medication may interact with other antihypertensive agents, increasing the risk of side effects when used in combination with certain drugs; thus, patients should consult their doctor or pharmacist if they are taking other medications. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding mothers should avoid this medication or discontinue breastfeeding. The safety and efficacy in children under 18 years of age have not been established, and its use is not recommended. Elderly patients should be closely monitored for the risk of stroke due to excessive blood pressure lowering while taking this medication. In case of overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure, dizziness, and worsening kidney function may occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and it is advisable to maintain its sealed status until just before use. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery as it may cause fainting or dizziness.
