Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease in patients aged 55 years and older who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, or stroke or evidence of end-organ damage in high-risk diabetic patients. Therefore, this drug is effective in controlling blood pressure while preventing the occurrence and progression of cardiovascular diseases.
Essential Hypertension: Administer Telmisartan orally as 40 mg once daily with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily, and the maximum antihypertensive effect is observed 4 to 8 weeks after dose escalation. Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease Risk: It is recommended to administer 80 mg once daily with water.
This medication can cause serious damage to the fetus, especially during pregnancy, and must be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used by individuals allergic to this drug or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, patients with a history of hereditary angioedema, and patients with diabetes or severe kidney impairment. Caution should be exercised when administering to elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, liver impairment, valvular heart disease, and ischemic heart disease, as severely low blood pressure may present serious problems. During treatment, various adverse reactions such as infections, blood abnormalities, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, depression, dizziness, hypotension, dyspnea, liver dysfunction, skin rash, myalgia, and renal dysfunction may occur, so symptoms should be closely monitored. If there are symptoms of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, tongue), immediately discontinue use and inform medical personnel. Patients with impaired renal function or undergoing dialysis should regularly check serum potassium and creatinine levels, as there is a risk of hypotension in cases of insufficient blood volume or sodium. This medication may enhance the hypotensive effects of other antihypertensive agents, and there may be increased risks of renal function deterioration, hyperkalemia, and hypotension when used in combination with certain drugs, so it should be taken after consulting with a doctor. Avoid taking this medication for 24 hours before surgery, and patients with gastrointestinal disorders should exercise caution due to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery due to the possibility of dizziness or fainting. Taking an overdose may result in hypotension, arrhythmias, dizziness, acute kidney failure, etc., and immediate medical attention is required, as this drug is not removed by dialysis, necessitating careful observation and appropriate treatment. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended. This medication contains sorbitol, so patients with fructose intolerance should not take it, and patients at high risk of hyperkalemia, such as diabetics or those with kidney impairment, should carefully monitor potassium levels.
