Prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke by reducing the risk of essential hypertension and cardiovascular diseases
This medication helps control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension, reducing cardiovascular burden and the risk of major cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke. It is particularly effective for high-risk patients over 55 years old who cannot use ACE inhibitors, thus contributing to a decrease in mortality related to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this drug plays an important role in managing hypertension and preventing cardiovascular diseases.
For essential hypertension, the recommended dosage is 40 mg orally once daily as telmisartan, which may be effective at 20 mg once daily depending on the patient. If necessary, the dose can be increased up to 80 mg once daily. For reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, the recommended dosage is 80 mg orally once daily. Patients with liver impairment should not exceed 40 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm, especially to the fetus and newborn, during pregnancy, and should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with severely impaired liver function or problems with bile secretion should avoid this medication. It should also not be administered to patients with a history of angioedema or to those with certain hereditary angioedema. Diabetic patients or those with severe renal impairment should avoid the combination of this drug with certain medications. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, those with mild liver impairment, and patients with heart valve disease should exercise caution when taking this medication. For patients with heart or cerebrovascular issues, caution is necessary as blood pressure may drop too low. Patients with active gastric or duodenal ulcers should exercise caution due to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients with renal vascular issues should also be cautious due to the risk of renal function deterioration. It is important to regularly monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels while taking this medication. If blood pressure drops too low or symptoms such as dizziness or fainting occur, inform medical personnel immediately. Caution is required when this medication is used in combination with other antihypertensives, as the blood pressure-lowering effect may be enhanced. Additionally, there may be interactions with certain medications, so it is vital to inform healthcare providers about any other medications being taken. This medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness while driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children or adolescents under 18 years of age, and its use is not recommended.
