Treatment of myocardial ischemia caused by hypertension and coronary artery disease (stable and unstable angina) and reduction of risks associated with hospitalization for angina and vascular procedures.
This medication is used for the treatment of stable angina caused by fixed closure of coronary arteries leading to myocardial ischemia, and unstable angina caused by coronary artery spasm and constriction. Additionally, in patients with confirmed coronary artery disease through recent angiography who do not have heart failure and have a left ventricular ejection fraction of over 40%, the drug aids in reducing hospitalization risk due to angina and the risks associated with coronary artery revascularization procedures. This medication effectively acts on cardiovascular-related diseases to improve symptoms.
For adults, the usual dose is 5mg of amlodipine taken orally once daily, and it can be increased to a maximum of 10mg daily depending on the patient's response. Adjustments should be made according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it is contraindicated in patients with allergies to this drug or similar medications, breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver dysfunction, patients with severe aortic stenosis, and patients in shock. Additionally, special care is required when using this medication in patients with severe hypotension, patients needing dialysis due to kidney failure, the elderly, pregnant women, or women who may become pregnant. While taking this medication, side effects such as facial flushing due to vasodilation, fatigue, edema, palpitations, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, abdominal pain, and nausea may occur. Rarely, side effects such as hypotension, vasculitis, neurological symptoms, indigestion, liver dysfunction, and skin rashes have also been reported. Patients with heart failure or impaired liver function should exercise extra caution when using this medication, as blood pressure may gradually drop even after discontinuation of the drug, requiring careful monitoring if other antihypertensive medications are used concurrently. This drug is less likely to significantly impair driving or operating machinery; however, caution is advised as effects may vary by individual. When used in conjunction with other medications, interactions may occur; therefore, consult a physician or pharmacist, especially when combining with specific antibiotics, analgesics, antihypertensive drugs, grapefruit juice, etc. Taking certain medications together may enhance the effectiveness of this drug or increase the risk of side effects. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to avoid its use unless special circumstances arise, and if breastfeeding, it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding during treatment with this drug. For pediatric use, it is recommended only for children aged 6 years and above, as the efficacy and safety have not been established for children under 6 years. In case of overdose, severe hypotension and irregular heartbeats may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention, and emergency measures such as gastric lavage or administration of activated charcoal may be required. This medication has not been shown to cause carcinogenic or genetic abnormalities with long-term use and can be used relatively safely in both healthy adults and the elderly.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
