Wilson's disease is a condition in which copper is accumulated in the body due to improper copper metabolism. This medication is used to reduce copper accumulation in patients with Wilson's disease and to alleviate related symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults are typically administered 50mg of zinc orally 3 times a day, with a maximum dosage of 250mg per day (which can be administered as 50mg 5 times a day). Oral administration should be done at least 1 hour before meals or at least 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

For pregnant women and children over 6 years old, 25mg of zinc is administered orally 3 times a day.

Precautions

This medication has a slow onset of action and is not suitable for initial treatment in patients with symptoms. Patients with symptoms should initially use other medications. Patients who are allergic to this drug or its components should not use it. Elderly individuals, pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and patients with certain liver diseases should take special precautions when using this medication. While taking this medication, regular liver function and urine tests should be conducted, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Long-term use may result in copper deficiency, so copper levels should be monitored periodically. Additionally, gastrointestinal side effects such as gastric ulcers may occur; therefore, if gastrointestinal symptoms arise, immediate discontinuation of the medication is required. This medication may be less effective when taken with certain other drugs, so adequate spacing between medications should be observed. Elderly patients may have decreased physical function, so administration should be more cautious. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should be careful when using this medication, as it may affect the fetus, and breastfeeding women are advised to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication. The safety of this medication has not been established in children, especially in newborns or infants, so caution is advised. In case of overdose, severe side effects such as severe vomiting, dizziness, and renal failure may occur; therefore, if an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required.

Esophageal variceal bleeding, uterine rupture and miscarriage, renal failure, death due to hemorrhagic pancreatitis, gastric ulcer, gastric ulcer perforation accompanied by anemia and peritonitis.
