Treatment of Wilson's disease
Wilson's disease is a condition characterized by the accumulation of copper in the liver and brain due to abnormal copper metabolism. This medication is used to reduce copper accumulation in patients with Wilson's disease and alleviate associated symptoms.
For adults, the usual dose is 50mg of zinc per oral administration three times daily, with a maximum daily dose of 250mg (50mg five times daily). Oral administration should be at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
For pregnant women and children over 6 years of age, the usual dose is 25mg of zinc per oral administration three times daily. Oral administration should be at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
This medication has a slow onset of action and is not suitable for initial treatment in patients who already show symptoms. It is recommended that patients with symptoms initially be treated with chelating agents. Patients who have a history of allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to this medication or its components should not use it. Elderly patients, pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and patients with non-specific liver diseases should exercise special caution when using this medication. In particular, patients with a history of allergy to the ingredient Yellow 4 (Tartrazine) contained in this medication should use it cautiously. Using this medication may result in elevated levels of lipase and amylase in blood tests, along with symptoms such as reduced iron concentration and gastrointestinal discomfort. Additionally, various side effects including vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and headaches have been reported, so if any unusual symptoms occur, immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is necessary. When this medication is first administered, liver function tests and urinalysis should be conducted at least once a month to monitor the patient's condition. Changes in liver enzyme levels should be closely observed, and the dosage should be adjusted as necessary. This medication may reduce the effectiveness of chelating agents when taken together, so a minimum interval of 1 hour should be maintained between their administrations. Also, taking this medication with food may delay its absorption, so it is recommended to take it more than 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Elderly patients may have reduced physical function, so they should be monitored more closely when using this medication. Due to limited experience with this medication in pregnant women, caution should be exercised as it may affect the fetus; nursing mothers should avoid breastfeeding while on this medication as it can pass into breast milk and affect the baby. The safety of this medication in children, especially low-birth-weight newborns or infants, has not been sufficiently confirmed, so it should be used cautiously. In case of overdose, serious side effects like severe vomiting, dizziness, kidney failure, or death due to hemorrhagic pancreatitis may occur; therefore, in cases of overdose, immediate medical attention is required for gastric lavage or detoxification treatment.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
