Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and can break easily, and this medication helps maintain bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures. It is particularly effective in preventing bone loss due to hormonal changes following menopause, thereby maintaining healthy bones.
Adults: Administer risedronate sodium 150 mg orally once monthly. No dose adjustment is necessary in elderly patients (over 60 years of age), because the bioavailability and pharmacodynamics of this drug are similar to those in younger adults. No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with a creatinine clearance of 30 mL/min or higher. This drug is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment with a creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min. Because food interferes with the absorption of this drug, take it at least 30 minutes before the first food or beverage other than water of the day to ensure adequate absorption. To facilitate passage of this drug into the stomach and reduce the possibility of esophageal irritation, take it in an upright position with a sufficient amount of plain water (170 ∼ 230 mL). Taking it with other beverages, including mineral water, may reduce absorption of this drug. Do not chew or suck this drug because of the possibility of oropharyngeal ulceration. Patients should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. If a patient forgets to take this drug on the scheduled day, take it as follows. If the next scheduled dose is 7 days or more away, take 1 tablet the next morning after remembering. Take the next dose on the originally scheduled day. Do not take more than 1 tablet of this drug within 7 days. If the next scheduled dose is within 7 days, wait until the originally scheduled day and then take 1 tablet of this drug.
Children under 18 years of age: Safety and efficacy have not been established.
This medication can irritate the gastric and esophageal mucosa, so individuals with gastritis or esophageal diseases should be particularly cautious when taking it. Taking the medication while lying down or not drinking enough water can increase the risk of esophageal injury, so it should be taken with 170-230 mL of water and you should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. If you experience symptoms such as dysphagia, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn while taking this medication, immediately discontinue use and consult your doctor. Patients with esophageal stricture, achalasia, hypocalcemia, severe renal impairment, pregnant or nursing women, and those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Calcium and vitamin D must be supplemented if deficient, particularly for patients undergoing long-term steroid treatment. When taking this medication, taking it simultaneously with foods or medications containing multivalent cations such as calcium, magnesium, iron, or aluminum can interfere with absorption, so a gap of 30 minutes to 2 hours before or after taking this medication is recommended. This medication should be swallowed whole as chewing or sucking it can cause ulcers in the mouth and esophagus, and it is best not to take it right before bedtime or right after waking up. Rarely, long-term use may result in adverse effects such as jaw necrosis, atypical femoral fractures, bone pain, joint pain, and muscle pain, so report any abnormal symptoms to your doctor. It is advisable to avoid taking this medication during pregnancy or nursing, and women of childbearing potential should consult a doctor before taking it. Older adults exhibit similar safety profiles to younger adults, but it is important to adhere closely to administration guidelines. An overdose may present symptoms of hypocalcemia; in emergencies, calcium supplementation and gastric lavage may be necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air exposure and kept at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage helps maintain the efficacy of the medication and prevents deterioration.
