Treatment of hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (reducing stroke risk)
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with hypertension, particularly helping to reduce the risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. It is also effective in preventing the progression of kidney complications in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Therefore, it is used to improve various complications associated with hypertension.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For hypertension treatment, the initial and maintenance dose is recommended as 50 mg of Losartan Potassium administered orally once daily. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is observed 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the same dose can be split and taken twice daily, or if necessary, the dose can be increased to 100 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older with a weight between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, a recommended dosage of 25 mg once daily is advised, with a maximum of 50 mg once daily as needed. For those weighing 50 kg or more
This medication can cause serious damage to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Using this medication during pregnancy may impair fetal lung development or cause skeletal deformities, and newborns may exhibit issues such as decreased skull formation, kidney failure, and low blood pressure. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, patients with certain genetic disorders, or women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Elderly patients, patients with weakened kidney function, and those with hyperkalemia require special caution when using this medication, and dosage should be gradually increased under medical supervision due to the risk of sudden drops in blood pressure. Side effects such as dizziness, muscle cramps, low back pain, respiratory infections, and others may occur, and rare severe reactions such as angioedema, liver dysfunction, or serious muscle damage can arise; any unusual symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately. This medication should be avoided when taken with other antihypertensive medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, or potassium supplements due to the risk of elevated potassium levels, and co-administration with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce blood-pressure-lowering efficacy or worsen kidney function. It is important to regularly monitor blood pressure and blood tests, especially kidney function and serum potassium levels, during the administration of this medication. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult with a physician, and it is advisable to avoid this medication while breastfeeding. This medication is not administered to children, especially those under 6 years of age or those with severe kidney dysfunction.
